Martin County in Brief

Martin County is the Treasure Coast’s southern gate. Stuart, the county seat, sits where the St. Lucie River widens toward the inlet, and much of the county’s life revolves around boats, from sailfish charters to kayak rentals. Strict limits on building height keep the skyline low, and a large share of the coastline is protected as parkland.

Beyond the best-known museums and beaches, a few quieter places are worth seeking out. Seabranch Preserve State Park, between Stuart and Hobe Sound, protects a rare patch of sand pine scrub on an old dune ridge above the Indian River Lagoon, with sandy trails where gopher tortoises and scrub-jays live. Sandsprit Park in Port Salerno is a waterfront county park with boat ramps, a beach on the river and picnic areas looking out over the water.

In Jensen Beach, the History Museum of Jensen Beach, run with the local chamber of commerce in the community center, tells the story of the town’s pineapple-growing years and the families who settled along the lagoon. Pair it with the November Pineapple Festival, which is back on the calendar.

Paddling the St. Lucie River and the mangrove shoreline of the lagoon is one of the best ways to see the county, and outfitters in Stuart and Jensen Beach rent kayaks and lead tours. For the full list of Martin County museums, beaches, restaurants and events, see our Martin County guide.

Martin County — FAQ

Is Stuart a good base for the whole Treasure Coast?

For the southern half, yes. Fort Pierce is about 30 minutes north and Vero Beach about 45 minutes, so day trips to the other counties are easy.

Where can I see gopher tortoises in Martin County?

Seabranch Preserve State Park is a good bet; walk the sandy scrub trails quietly in the morning and watch for burrows.
