Indian River County in Brief

Indian River County is the Treasure Coast’s northern end and its most polished corner. Vero Beach has an oceanfront district of shops and restaurants, a well-funded arts scene and some of Florida’s best-known citrus groves inland; Sebastian, to the north, is a laid-back river town of fishing docks and seafood shacks; and Fellsmere, out west, is ranch and marsh country.

A few smaller cultural stops round out a visit. The Laura (Riding) Jackson Home, a Florida Cracker-style house moved to the grounds of the Environmental Learning Center, honors the poet and critic who lived in Wabasso for decades and hosts readings and talks. The Vero Beach Theatre Guild has staged community theater for more than 60 years, and the Vero Beach Book Center is a well-stocked independent bookstore that hosts author events through the season.

Bird lovers should look up the Pelican Island Audubon Society, founded in 1964, which runs walks, talks and conservation programs around the lagoon, close to Pelican Island, the first national wildlife refuge in the country. Out on the barrier island, county beach parks at Wabasso, Treasure Shores and Golden Sands sit close to the 1715 Fleet wreck sites.

Indian River County also has the Treasure Coast’s airport with the most scheduled service, Vero Beach Regional. For more places, restaurants and events, see our Indian River County guide.
